Overview

The roan is one of Africa's largest and most prestigious antelopes, a horse-like giant of the wooded savanna prized as a premier, high-value plains-game trophy. Rare and imposing, a mature roan bull is a hunt of a lifetime.

Identification & Appearance

Roan are large and horse-like, reddish-brown to gray with a black-and-white face mask, long tasseled ears, an upright mane, and backward-curving ridged horns in both sexes. Only the sable exceeds them in stature among the horse antelopes.

Range & Habitat

They occupy open woodland and tall-grass savanna with access to water across parts of southern, central and eastern Africa, at low densities.

Behavior & Sign

Roan live in small herds led by a dominant bull, are alert and can be aggressive, and hold in wooded grassland near water. Sign includes large tracks, dung and grazing in tall grass.

Hunting Seasons & Timing

Hunted on the dry-season plains-game calendar, roughly April through October, when animals concentrate near water.

Hunting Methods

Spot-and-stalk and tracking through wooded savanna, glassing for a heavy-horned bull and closing carefully in cover.

Gear & Optics

A .30 caliber and up with premium bullets suits a large, tough antelope. Quality glass helps judge horn length and mass at a distance.

Shot Placement & Field Care

Place the bullet firmly on the shoulder into the heart-lung area; roan are big and hardy. The masked cape and long horns make an imposing mount.

Meat & Eating Quality

Roan venison is good, though as a high-value trophy the meat is secondary to the mount and usually used in camp.

Common Mistakes

Undergunning a big antelope and misjudging a young bull for a mature one.

Regulations & Conservation

Roan are scarce and expensive, hunted under strict quotas that support their conservation on managed land. Confirm CITES and import rules. This is a reading guide, not legal advice.

FAQ

Roan or sable? Sable are darker with longer, more sweeping horns; roan are grayer with a bold face mask.

Why so prized? Their size, scarcity and imposing looks make them a top plains-game trophy.
