Identification & Appearance
Roan are large and horse-like, reddish-brown to gray with a black-and-white face mask, long tasseled ears, an upright mane, and backward-curving ridged horns in both sexes. Only the sable exceeds them in stature among the horse antelopes.
Range & Habitat
They occupy open woodland and tall-grass savanna with access to water across parts of southern, central and eastern Africa, at low densities.
Behavior & Sign
Roan live in small herds led by a dominant bull, are alert and can be aggressive, and hold in wooded grassland near water. Sign includes large tracks, dung and grazing in tall grass.
